Her obituary in the Morehead News says: Mrs. Martha Ann Petitt McBrayer, 70, Morehead, died Thursday July 17, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, following a brief illness. Mrs. McBrayer was born Aug 6, 1909 in Rowan Co., a daughter of the late Jessie and Emma Jane Clark Petitt. She was a member of the Morehead Church of God for more than 48 years and was past worthy matron of the Morehead Chapter 227 Order of the Eastern Star where she was a member for more than 43 years. She and her husband J. Earl McBrayer started the McBrayer Economy Stoor in Morehead in 1934, and established the McBrayer Furniture Store in Morehead in 1938. McBrayer Variety Stores were established in 1955, now known as Ben Franklin Stores with stores in Vanceburg, Olive Hill and Morehead. In 1957, the McBrayers started Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Morehead, and from 1956 to 1960, Mrs. McBrayer assisted her husband in the operation of the Stucky-McBrayer Funeral Home. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jack McBrayer, Morehead and Phillip McBrayer of Silver Springs, Md., four daughters, Mrs. Pauline Ellington, Morehead, Mrs. Stella Frances Ausbun, Ashland; Mrs. Phyllis Ann Dixon, Baltimore, and Mrs. Hildreth Marie Chapman, Winter Haven, Fla. Also two brothers, Sanford Petitt, Rockford, Ill., and Harrison Petitt, Wabash, Ind.; six sisters, Mrs. Vesta Hall, Wabash, Mrs. Nellie Baldridge, Clearfield, Mrs. Viola McBrayer, Elliottville, Mrs. Lila Chadwell, Morehead, Mrs. Isa Smith, Leesburg, Ind., and Mrs. Geneva Bays, Goshen, Ind., and 18 grandchildren. Services were conducted Sunday, July 20 by the Revs. Frank Fultz and Scott Griffith. Burial was in Forest Lawn. Grandsons served as pallbearers. They were Brian McBrayer, Kevin Chapman, David McBrayer, Tommy Dixon, Danny McBrayer and Darren Chapman.
