According to Elza Cox, Tobias never married, but had children by at least five different women. Note that the first woman he had children by, Sally Cox Quesenberry, was his aunt, the sister of his mother, when he was only 13 and she was 45! (I'd like to get some verification of this, perhaps an 1860 census reading for Sally's family, and death certifications for her children. They might not name the father, but at least I could check whether she really had four children between the ages of 45 and 53.) The third woman he had children by, Nantie Phillips, was the daughter of a marriage between his double first cousin and his second cousin. His fourth family not published by request. The fifth woman he had children by, Sally Cox, was his first cousin on the Cox side, and his second cousin on the Phillips side.
On p. 14, The Genealogy of William Tobias Phillips, Elza Cox writes "Tobias L. Phillips, Jr. ... died in 1890. However on his tombstone located in the Cox Family Cemetery on the William Moten Cox property at Indian Valley it reads: Tobias Phillips, Sr., born Feb 19, 1932 died Dec 19, 1895." Elza does not mention his source for the 1890 date of death. |

| Tobias L. Phillips will show up as a "Husband" of Rachel Montgomery on family charts, but he and Rachel were not really married. He was the father of her first child, and possibly her second, but I am linking him as the second "spouse" so that Mahlon will show up on the Spouse line in her parent's family group chart. |
