| Emma Jane (Clark) Petitt when interviewed by Phil McBrayer in the late 60's said that her mother was Susie Jones, and her father Sammy Clark, who died when she was 2, her stepfather Bill John Dehart. Emma would have been 2 years old in late 1887 to 1888. Sammy would have been about 25 years old. |

Since "little Sammy" did not become a head-of-household until 1882, and died before 1890, he does not appear as a head of household in any census.
1885 tax lists of Rowan Co. lists on p. 8:
Clarke, Saml Jr., 60 acres, neighbor John Black, 1 male over 21, no children 6-20. (People in other categories are not enumerated. The "Jr." is to distinguish this Samuel from his uncle Samuel F. Clark.)
