| Notes for William Paul "Bill John" Dehart |
In most written records his name was given as William Paul (e.g., their son Jesse's obituary identifies him as son of "the late William Paul Dehart and Susan Jones" see Jesse's notes, and his tombstone is labelled "W. P. Dehart" see Susie's notes.) But all his children are consistent in naming their father as "Bill John" Dehart, and a few records do list him as W. J. Dehart (e.g., his daughter Laura's marriage record.) According to William Voigt, the reason he was called "Bill John" was because his father was named John.2
Ora Dehart (youngest son of W. P. and Susie), interviewed by Phil McBrayer in 1993, said that his father Bill John Dehart had siblings named Al, Jimmy, Kern, Sarah who never married, and another daughter who married a Caudill. Ora did not remember his grandparents' given names, but the list of children (except for Kern, which may be a nickname for Hazel Green) matches those of John Dehart & Nancy Bumgartner. I don't have the 1860 or 1870 census readings for that family.
Ora also said that Bill John's first wife was Steve Conn's sister, and that their children (Ora's half-siblings) were Jack Dehart who married Martha Ann Clark, Jennie who married a Mynier, and Lucy who married a Warren. Ora lists his full siblings as Boone who married Annie Jent, Laura who married Jesse Crose, Lizzie who married Willy Crose, Frank who married Virgie Brown, Jess who married first Mandy Jane Mabry then Nellie Trent, Ollie who married Charlie Thornsbury, and Rosa who married Ramsey Wright. |
| Notes for Mary Susan ("Susie") Jones |
Joint stone in Black-Trent Cemetery on Trent Ridge says "Susie Dehart May 3, 1866 - Oct 23, 1930 : W. P. Dehart Jan 14, 1854 - May 25, 1922".
Index to Kentucky Death Records lists Mary S. Dehart, d. 22 Oct 1930, age 64, in Rowan Co., certificate Vol. 58, #28607. |
| Notes for William Paul "Bill John" & Mary Susan ("Susie") (Family) |
| Rowan Co. marriage records, Book A, p. 32, lists marriage of William P. Dehart and Mary S. Dehart on 24 Nov 1890. (That Mary Susan was already named Dehart is confirming evidence of her brief marriage to William Madison "Bill Tom" Dehart, which otherwise I have no record of beyond family interviews.) |
| Census |
1900 census of Rowan Co., KY, Hogstown prec. 4, lists as family #148:
William Deheart, 32, b. 1-68; Mary S., 33, b. 6-67; couple married 10 yrs, Mary S. mother of 10 children, 9 living; David M., 15, b. 7-84; Emma J., 14, b. 11-85; Martha A., 12, b. 10-87; Laurhe M. (dau), 9, b. 3-91; Daniel B., 6, b. 1-94; Lizzie M., 4, b. 2-96; Rosetta, 2, b. 3-98; James F., 0 mos., b. 5-00; Martin, 20, b. 7-79. All b. in KY. The 3 teens make it clear that Mary S. is Susie Jones Clark Deheart, though they are listed as Deheart instead of Clark. The year of birth for William is not consistent with the 1880 census, the 1910 census nor with his date of birth on his tombstone, in fact it is 14 years younger, which might lead one to think that this William Deheart is not the same one whom Susie was married to in 1910, but their son Ora was definite that Laura, Boone, Lizzie, Rose, Frank, Jesse, and Ollie were all his full siblings, that Jackson and Lucy Dehart were his half-siblings, and that their father was Bill John Dehart. Martin is labelled in this census as a son, despite being listed after the other children, but he is too old to be a son of Susie, and from the 1880 census of Elliott Co. he is really the son of Allen Dehart (Bill John's brother, per Ora Dehart.) Note that one of Susie's 9 living children (Sarah) was already married, which is consistent with only the first 8 listed being hers.
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown prec., E.D. 156, page 7A, taken 23 Apr, records as family #107 (between William J. Deheart and Jesse Crose):
William P. Deheart, 56; Susan, 43; married 20 years, second marriage for both, Susan mother of 12 children, all living; Lizzie M., 14; Daniel B., 16; Rosetta, 12; James F., 10; Jesse L., 8; Olivy, 5; Ora V., 3 (son); Clarke, David (says son, though it should be stepson), 26, widowed; Mary S., granddau, 1; grandson Venton I., 7/12. All born in Kentucky.
1920 census of Rowan Co., magisterial district #3, records as family #198 (between Mary Susan's son David Clark and her brother James Jones):
Dehart, W. P., 67; Mary, 63; Rosa, 22; Frank, 20; Jesse (listed as daughter/female, but it's wrong), 17; Ola, 14; Ora, 12. All born in Kentucky. |
