| Notes for Oliver Quesenberry |
According to John P. Alderman's annotated 1860 census of Floyd County, VA, Oliver served in Company G, 54th Virginia, mustered 16 Sept 1861 at Dugspur. Transferred to Co. D 29th Virginia. He was with the 29th as company drummer until the end of the Civil War. Eli Lambert played the fife with him.
On his Soldier's Application for Pension, No. 1853, State of Ky, Oliver states that he was born 7 Sep 1842 in Carroll Co., VA, that he served under Capt. Geo. Turman & Col. Robert Trigg, went into service 8 Aug 1861, was with Lee when he surrendered at Appomatox 9 Apr 1865 (states "I was right with him"), and that the remainder of the war Oliver was in Co. D 29th under Col. James Giles and Capt. Tipton. Application Filed 17 June 1912, approved 13 June 1913. W. J. Stone, examiner.
Florence Hall said that her mother (Nancy Quesenberry) moved from Carroll County, VA, to Kentucky in a covered wagon when she was around nine years old. If Oliver's pension application is correct, Nancy would really have been 12 years old at the time. Earl McBrayer says that "Aunt Sis" told him Oliver walked from Virginia to Kentucky to prepare a home, on land about 1/2 mile NE of the present Old Oak Grove Church, then he walked back to Virginia and retrieved his family, in 1878 or 1879.

I have not found Oliver and Mahala in the 1870 census. Judging by the birthplaces of their children Andrew and Serena, they were still in Virginia.

Quesenberry, Oliver, 38, farmer; Mahala, 39; Lawson, 18; Isaac, 14; Nancy A., 12; Andrew, 10; Serena C., 8. All born in VA.
1890 Tax Rolls of Hogtown Prec., Rowan Co., KY, lists on p. 36, line 17:
Oliver Quesinberry, 210 acres, neighbor Sam Caudill, 1 male over 21, 2 children 6-20. (People in other categories are not enumerated.)
