Reportedly in the 1840 census of Russell Co., Virginia, although I haven't checked it.

1850 census of Perry Co., KY, lists as family #150:
Hammons, Esau, 38, VA, farmer; Elizabeth, 37, KY; John, 15, VA; Morgan, 13, VA; Nancy, 11, VA; Polly, 9, VA; Joshua, 7, VA; William, 5, KY; Mahala, 3, KY; Robert, 7/12, KY.
(I find it somewhat curious that the first 5 children were born in Virginia when Esau and Elizabeth were married in 1832 in Perry Co. Ky.)

1860 census of Morgan Co. KY, district 2, lists as family #313:
Hammons, Esau, 46, VA, farmer; Elizabeth, 46, KY; John W., 24, VA; Morgan B., 23, VA; Maryan, 16; VA; Joshua, 15, VA; William, 13, KY; Mahala, 11, KY; Robert P., 9, KY; Sarah J., 8, KY; David J., 3, KY.

1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Cristy Creek prec., dated 14 June, lists on p. 15/103, family #89:
Hammond, Esau, 54; Lucy, 37; Robert, 17; David, 15; McClain, Elizabeth, 15; John, 12; James, 9.
(The fact that James age 9 is the youngest child even though Lucy is only 37 suggests that David McClain had died sometime around 1861-1863, and that Lucy and Esau had only recently married.)

1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead prec., lists as family #129:
Hammon, Esaw, 66, Va NC NC; Lucy, 48, Ky Ky Ky; Allis, 8, Ky Va Ky.
Family #128 is that of David Hammon (who is listed as only 22, when he was probably really 25).
