| Notes for John M. Hall |
Clearfield Cem. contains adjacent stones for: John M. Hall, 10 Jan 1844 - 18 May 1910 Susan Roberts Hall, 7 Nov 1848 - 8 June 1944
Family history by Mrs. Hassard Hall says John M. Hall b. 28 Jan 1843. Most of the birthdates for children in this family, esp. those born after 1880, are from her account. She lists the first child as "Edward" b. 17 Nov 1869. She also lists a "Minta" b. 20 Nov 1871, but that conflicts with the birthdate of Mary Lou b. Jan 1872, and is not supported by census data. And she lists "Armanda" b. 15 Feb 1880. I believe that "Armanda" and "Minta" are the same person, probably named Arminta or Arminda, and that Mrs. Hall has put someone else's birthdate to the extra person (there are many similar errors in her account.) |
| Census |
1870 census of Bath Co., KY, lists on p. 83:
John M. Hall: 26; Susan: 21; James: 7/12, b. Nov; Troy Roberts: 11; Annie Hall: 75. Annie is John's mother. Troy is Susan's brother; he was listed as Mitchell in the 1860 census.
1880 census of Rowan Co., KY, Morehead prec., lists family #43:
John Hall, 36; Martha S., 25; Jas S., 10; Mary L., 8; Anna, 6; Nannie, 6; Arminah, 3/12.
Neither John Hall nor his son James is in the 1900 census of Rowan Co. They must have been living elsewhere for a while. (Actually, I should look for James under the name Ed, which I haven't done.)
1910 census of Rowan Co., KY, Cristy Creek prec., p. 7A, lists family #112:
Hall, John, 66; (w) Martha S., 61; married 46 yrs, 10 children, 7 living; (s) Chesie M., 23; (d-i-l) Betty, 23, married 0 yrs, second marriage for both; (d) Anna, 35, married 10 yrs, 2 children, 2 living; (gr-s) Purvis, Cecil, 9; (gr-d) Odie, 6; (gr-d) Hall, Delia, 3.
Everyone is listed as born in Kentucky, including John's parents, though they were really born in Virginia. The Purvis children would appear to be Anna's, but she is not listed as a Purvis (she has the long dash in the surname column that the enumerator used like a ditto mark.) I suspect she was divorced from Frank Purvis, and either returned to her maiden name, or married another Hall. |
| Notes for Martha Susan Roberts |
She was listed as age 7 in 1850, and as age 12 in 1860, implying a date of birth between 1843 and 1848.
Phil McBrayer's interviews with Emma (Clark) Petitt, as well as Juanita Blair's"Past Images of Rowan County"7 both say that Susan Roberts married second her nephew-by-marriage William T. "Buddy" Hall. But Nancy (Hall) Rose, daughter of Emmett Hall, says that Buddy married only once, and that it was Albert David Hall who married his aunt-by-marriage, as his fifth wife. That seems even stranger, since Susan was only 6 years older than Buddy, but 25 years older than Albert. Also, if the Rachel who was Albert's fourth wife is the one who died in 1973 at age 78, then she outlived Albert. So until I get some solid evidence, such as an obituary or a marriage record, I am not tying Susan to either of them as a second husband, but only describing this in her notes. |
