Notes for Tobias Quesenberry
Tobias and Nancy are the only people buried in a private cemetery located off Route 682, .4 miles east of Rt 52 intersection. Their stones spell their surname as Quesinberry. According to the published Cemetery Records of Carroll County, Tobias' stone has the birthdate "12 Oct 1820" and no death date; Nancy's says 6 Jan 1827 - 9 Mar 1905. But a birthdate of 1820 for Tobias would conflict with his age in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and with the 1850 census reading for his brother James, which suggests James was born about 1820. So I am guessing that 1825 may have been misread as 1820 on the stone.

The Isaac Quesenberry Record contains the following text:

"Tobias Quesinberry was the son of Thomas and Tobitha Cock Quesinberry, born and reared in Snake Creek. He married Nancy Bobbitt, daughter of Greenberry Bobbitt, and came to live at Mountain Plains near the home of his father-in-law. Tobias and Nancy had six children, Caleb John (1844 or 45), Greenberry (June 9, 1847), J. Wesley (1856), Thomas (1858), William F. (1861), and Lydia (1863). Tobias was in his 30's when the Civil War broke out, but he left the county with the militia in the spring of 1862 for a short tour of duty in Smyth County. He was taken into the Confederate Army a year later - mustering into Company I 45th, Virginia on Feb. 20, 1863 at Hillsville and was with the company until his capture at Piedmont on June 5, 1864. He was sent to a prison camp at Indianapolis, Indiana where he was one of the few to endure the prison life to see the end of the war. He was then released June 12, 1865 - one year and seven days after his capture. He returned home and lived to an old age."
