Most data on the family of Tobias C. Phillips and Mary Elizabeth Quesenberry from Cox-Phillips Newsletter, Vol. 5, No. 2, p. 35, a transcription of entries from their family bible . This bible was handed down to their daughter Ruth Jane Phillips who added later entries, and is now (1991) in the possession of their granddaughter, Nora Lala Agnes Phillips Spence of Indian Valley, Virginia.
Marriage return states "this certifies that the Rite of Holy Matrimony was celebrated between Tobias Phillips, Jr. of Indian Valley, Va. and Mary E. Quesenberry of Indian Valley on March 9, 1871 at the home of Andrew Quesenberry by Isaac L. Rigney." Although Tobias was referred to as Tobias Jr (he is also so named in the bible record), this is not because his father was named Tobias, but rather to distinguish him from other relatives such as Tobias L. Phillips and Tobias D. Phillips. He was also sometimes known as "Little Tobe". Mary's parents Andrew Quesenberry and Abigail Banks were still residing in Dugspur in Carroll Co. in 1871; I wonder why Mary was referred to as "of Indian Valley"? |
