1840 census of Franklin Co., Ky, lists on p. 323, line 12, in Frankfort:
W.N. Pettit, 1 m < 5, 1 m 5-9, 1 m 10-14, 1 m 30-39, 1 f < 5, 1 f 30-39 (This is three lines before the family of F.D. Pettit)
1850 census of Franklin Co., KY, District #2, dated 20 Aug, lists on p. 78, family #390:
William N. Pettit, 46, cooper; Mary R., 46; William H., 15; Elizabeth F., 6; Andrew J., 5; Mildred I. (or J.), 3. All born in KY. (The occupation of cooper, and the middle initial of N, suggests that William may be related to Nathaniel Jr. and Benjamin D. Pettit who ran a cooper's shop around 1815-1820 near Lexington. Indeed, since Benjamin D. was married in 1800, and was listed in the 1820 census with two males in the 10-16 yr category, it is quite possible that William N. is a son of Benjamin D. Pettit and Charity Gillespie. Other possibilities for his parents include Samuel and Elizabeth of Scott Co.. or Thomas of Washington Co. (son of Obediah), who named a son William H. in his will. Thomas of Washington Co. does not appear in the 1810 census of Ky., but if he migrated from Virginia concurrently with his brother Nathaniel Sr., then he may have been in Ky but not a head of household.) |
