| Notes for Moses Quesenberry |
Anderson C. Quisenberry, in his 1897 Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family, writes of Moses Quisenberry: "It seems that he moved to the southwestern part of Kentucky, and in the land office of that State are records of early purchases of land by Moses Quisenberry, in Breckinridge and Green counties. He left numerous descendants, some of whom are now living in Meade and Christian counties." However, in his later article in the book Colonial Families of the United States, he writes that "Moses lived and died in Orange Co., Va.; Among his children were James, John, George, and Edward Sanford. All of these settled in Christian Co., Ky., about 1835." So A.C.Q. appears to have changed his opinion that the Moses who bought land in Breckinridge and Green counties was the one who was the son of Aaron Sr. and the father of Edward Sanford Quisenberry. (It is my opinion that the southwest Kentucky Moses was likely to have been a son or grandson of Aaron and Joyce's son John, who settled in Clark Co., Ky, in 1788 and moved to Warren Co., Ky in 1808. Warren Co. is very near Green and Breckinridge. Also, A.C.Q. writes that many of John's children and grandchildren moved to Missouri, and there was a Moses who married Mary Ellen Martin in Green Co., Ky in 1834, and moved to Johnson Co., Missouri in 1850.)
Many researchers have this Moses Quesenberry as the father of George Quesenberry of Grayson Co., VA, apparently since A.C.Q. writes that Moses had a son named George, but gives no other particulars on that George. But he is clearly too young. (The "about 1745-1752" estimate for Moses' birthdate is based on the birthdates of some of his known siblings and children, and the 1782 census which showed him as having 7 children at home. It could be as much as 4 years earlier. But it could not be early enough to have a son b. ca 1750, as our George was.)
[Moses appears twice in the LDS Ancestral File as a son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley. As 8LVD-26, his birthdate is given as about 1748, and he is linked as husband to Mary Gatewood. As NCFS-18, his birthdate is given as about 1763, and no marriage is entered. I believe the latter date is too late, because someone born in 1763 could not have seven children by 1782.] |
