John is with his mother and stepfather Esau Hammons in the 1870 census, and with his sister Mary Elizabeth in the 1880 census.
1900 Census of Rowan Co., KY, Morehead, lists as family #413:
John McClain, 40, b. 2-60; Rossie, 26, b. 3-74; married 5 yrs, 4 children, 4 living; Lizzie, 4; b. 5-96; Blanch, 2, b. 5-98.
The dates for John, Rosa, and Leafie are all wrong, so the date for the baby Blanche is not to be trusted either. This is probably one of the families where the enumerator made up the dates3. According to the birthdates Oleta gave me, at the time this census was taken Lillie would be 5 (almost 6), Leafie would be 3 (almost 4), and Mote would be just turned 1. Oleta said her mother did not have any sister named Blanche. It is also curious that the census says that John & Rossie have 4 children all living, but it only lists 2. One possibility is that there really was a daughter named Blanche born in 1898, who died young, and that for some reason Lillie and Mote weren't enumerated with the family at the time the census was taken. This would make 4 children, and the birthdates would be fairly close, if "Lizzie" is taken to be Leafie. Another possibility is that the number of children is wrong, the birthdates are low by about 1 1/2 years, "Lizzie" is Lillie, "Blanche" is Leafie, and only Mote was missing from the enumeration (maybe Oleta's birthdate for her is wrong, and she was really born in 1900.) |
