Harlan shot his father-in-law in 1934. My dad says that he remembers when he was a kid (he would have been 7 yrs old) Harlan came to their house, running from the law, and Truby refused to let him hide there. He was convicted of murder, and died in a prison brawl at the State Penitentiary in Louisville, killed by another inmate.
Bath Co. Criminal Court Records, Book 10, Reel C987411 at Kentucky State Archives, includes these notes on the case:
p. 425, 16 Feb 1934, bench warrant for Harlan Pettit charged with shooting and wounding with intent to kill.
p. 435, 23 Feb 1934, bail fixed at $1,500, trial set for May 2nd, "defendent having been arrested and brought into open court"
p. 457, 8 May 1934, bond ordered to be forfeited (he jumped bail)
p. 505, 26 Oct 1934, verdict of guilty

The index to Kentucky death records lists Harlan Pettit, d. 30 May 1946, age 29, in Jefferson Co., residence same, certificate Vol. 27, #13206. (The age must have been mistranscribed; it should be 39. The date of death is one day later than that on his gravestone.)
