| Notes for James O. Pettit |
Will of James O. Pettit, dated 9 June 1853, probated 11 July 1853, mentions: my wife (not named), my two children Sarah Randolph Pettit and Mary Jane Pettit. Executors my friends Nathaniel Berry and Alexander E. Prewitt.
"Our Family of Simmons", p. 7, says "Nathaniel Pettit and Martha Clifford were married March 9, 1818. Their son, James O. Pettit (died June 17, 1853) and Mary Ann Frances Blackwell (died Sept. 19, 1857) were married January 28, 1849." The marriage date is obviously in error, is it is before their births! It is also not likely to be a misreading of "1948", since James and Mary Frances had daughters aged 4 and 2 in 1850. Probably the author of the account transcribed a date that applied to a different event.
Fayette Co. records list James O. Pettit as the owner of a slave named Martha who was born in June 1852. |
| Census |
1850 census of Fayette Co., Ky, p. 224 (stamped)/446 (film), lists as family #450:
James O. Pettit, 27; Mary F., 22; Sarah R., 4; Mary J., 2; Nathaniel H. 2/12. I am assuming that James is a son of Nathaniel Pettit Jr. because there is no other Pettit family in the 1840 census with a son 15-19, and because James named his first son Nathaniel, and because on the previous page is the family of Rebecca Pettit who is probably Nathaniel's widow. |
