Notes for Joseph Tom Pettit
There is a stone in the New Sill Cemetery on Christy Creek Rd. in Rowan Co. that reads "Joe Tom Pettit 1881-1947". It is adjacent to a stone for "Neoma Pettit 1883-1926", probably his wife. I have not found a marriage record for them, but I haven't searched Carter Co. yet. Nor have I found Kentucky death records for either Joe Tom or Neoma, so they probably died elsewhere and were buried here. The other Pettits in the New Sill Cemetery are all from the families of John P. Pettit & Malissa Clark and their son Frank Pettit & wife Nettie James. And Frank's son Homer had a son Joe Tom Pettit (born about 1950.) This would seem to indicate that Joe Tom may have been another son of John, and thus an uncle to Homer. But John & Malissa were married in 1885, and in 1881 John was just 14. Of course, Joe Tom's birthdate on his stone could be off by a year or two, and John could have had a very short marriage before he married Malissa Clark. Or perhaps Joe Tom is another son of Preston Pettit and Mary Riddle. They were listed in the 1900 census as the parents of 9 children, 8 living, which is one more than I have listed for them, and a child born after 1880 who had left home by 1900 is about the only way to fit in another child. But if so, it is surprising that none of Jesse's children would mention having an Uncle Joe.

Another possibility would be that he is a son of Andrew Jackson "Jack" Pettit.

I have searched the microfilms of the Rowan County News and been unable to find an obituary for him..
Census
1910 Soundex of Kentucky, lists in Morgan Co., index #062 0143 0097:
Joseph T Pedit, 30; (w) Naomi, 26; (s) Cecil, 5; (d) Livian, 2; (s) Chinto, NR. (NR stands for no record. The Soundex cards are typed, so there is no mistaking what they say. But I suspect that the names "Livian" and "Chinto" are misreadings, and am tentatively guessing that the real names are Vivian and Chester. I should check the original.)
