His obituary in the Morehead News of June 21, 1996 reads:
"Melvin Sloan, 95, of Flat Fork, Olive Hill, died June 16 at the residence of his daughter, Ileen "Dump" Dehart of Elliottville. He was born on Oct. 13, 1900 in Morgan County to the late Buck Monroe and Milta Blanton Sloan. He was a retired sawmill employee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Trent Sloan on Sep. 28, 1985; two daughters, Audrey Sloan Pennington and Dellie Sloan; two sons, Glennis Ray Sloan and Melvin Sloan Jr.
Surviving with his daughter Ileen Dehart are six sons, Fonza Sloan of Olive Hill, Lonnie Sloan of Elliottville, Richard Sloan, Dennis Sloan and Kenneth Sloan, all of Olive Hill and Harold Sloan of Sandy Hook; six other daughters, Eula Mae Conley of Gary, Ind., Ivory Crose of Indiana, Louise Adkins, Maxine "Toodie" Dehart, Guyan Mabry and Stella Fraley, all of Elliottville. Also surviving are 54 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
Funera services were scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 at the Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with the Rev. Jack Evans and the Rev. Ray Glover officiating with burial at the Trent Cemetery-Trent Ridge.
Pallbearers: Bobby Dehart, Larry Fraley, Mitchell Burton, Ricky Osborne, David Osborne, Marvin Mabry and Allen Mabry."
