Notes for Jessie Crose
The age for Jessie on the marriage record (19) is in conflict with his cemetery inscription, which says that he was born 12 Jan 1888 (which would make him 21 in 1909), and with the 1900 census, which lists him as age 16, b. Mar 1884 (which would make him 25 in 1909.) The birthdates in the 1900 census of Rowan Co. are largely fictional, so I don't put much store by them, but if Jesse is off by four years, then his siblings would have to be off by about the same amount, since the spacing was every two years. (His next older brother John was born in Jan 1882, and his next younger brother Sammie was born in Jan 1886, both from death records and consistent with the 1900 census. His sister Lizzie was listed as born Jan 1888. See census notes for Abe Crose.) I think the most likely explanation is that he was born 12 Jan 1884 or possibly 1885, and that by the time of his death his age had become confused (heavens, it was already confused by the time of his marriage.)
Census
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown prec., E.D. 156, page 7A, taken 23 Apr, records as family #108 (between William P. Deheart and Andrew Quesinberry):
Crose, Jesse, 23, farm laborer; Laura M., 19; married 11 months. |
Notes for Jessie & Laura May (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 6, p. 583, records marriage on 15 May 1909 of Jessie Crose, 19, s/o Abraham & Martha Crose, to Laura May Dehart, 18, d/o Wm. J. & Susie Dehart, by F. M. Crisp at his house in Elliott Co., witnesses David Clark & Boon Dehart. (This is the only official record I have in which the middle initial of Susie's husband is given as "J." Usually it is "P". It seems that his full name was William John Paul Dehart, and the J was dropped from his signature to avoid confusion with William Jefferson Dehart.)
