Notes for John E. Pelfrey
Living in Fleming Co. in 1958, according to his sister Lizzie's obituary.
Notes for Amie Pettit
According to descendents, the name of James' daughter who was born in 1897 and married to John Pelfrey was Amie, but most of the official records (census and marriage) show her name as Annie. Some of those might be mistranscriptions, but the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Rowan Co. very definitely say Annie. I've compared other names on the same page, including double-letter ones such as Emma, Jennie, Fannie and Nannie, and the enumerators for both years consistently made n's with two humps and m's with three. My guess is that her name was pronounced "Ammie" rather than "Amy" (maybe it was a nickname of Amanda?), and that being such an uncommon name, census takers and county clerks generally misheard it as "Annie".
Census
In 1910, she was listed twice, once in Rowan Co. as a sister-in-law with the family of William A. Donohue and Arvilla Pettit, and once in Fleming Co., as a stepdaughter with the family of Veverly (Beverly) Pelfrey. Both listings show her as age 13, and have her name as "Annie".
Notes for John E. & Amie (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 11, p. 65 records marriage on 22 Feb 1919 of J. E. Pelfrey, 21, son of B. E. & Louisa Pelfrey, to Anna Pettit, 21, d/o J. L. Pettit and Elizzie Pelfrey, at Morehead by Arthur Hogge, witnesses A. E. Caudill and Mrs. Scott.
Note that the bride and groom were step-siblings, Lizzie and Beverley having married in Sep 1907, when J. E. and Amie were 9 or 10. |
