Rowan County marriage book 2, p. 289 contains license issued 16 Mar 1897 for W. T. Caudill, age 23, residence Elliottsville, born Rowan Co., father born in Letcher Co., mother born Kentucky, to Belle Messer, age 21, born Ky. First marriage for both spouses. There is no return recorded in that book, but register book A, p. 107 records the marriage as having taken place 17 Mar 1897.
The survey of cemeteries done by the Rowan County Historical Society records two wives as being buried with W. T. Caudill in Lee Cemetery. One of the stones is inscribed "Lyda Messer Caudill, died Apr 22, 1958", with no birthdate recorded. The surveyer's annotations say "2nd wife of William Caudill". The other is inscribed Eliza B. Caudill, wife of W. T. Caudill, born Aug 8, 1876, died 23 Jan 1915, and the surveyer's notes say "1st wife". Since a birthdate in 1876 matches the age at marriage for Belle, it appears most likely that the "Eliza B" who died in 1915 is Belle, and that William married a sister or other relative of his first wife after she died. |
