| Notes for Hezekiah Jones | ||||||||||
| Hezekiah was shot and killed by two sons of Wesley and Ceattie Cornett. According to Elaine Winkler, the cause was a dispute over a woman, but a newspaper of the time says that the shooting stemmed from an 'old feud': "From page 2 of the November 17, 1881 edition of The Independent: "Rowan County: Circuit court begins its fall term here Monday. The Commonwealth docket contains 65 cases. Of these, four are indictments for murder against the following parties, viz: . . . . John and Hiram Cornett and Garfield Williams, jointly indicted for killing Hezekiah Jones. The two last killings grew out of old feuds. . . . In the case against the Cornett boys and Williams, Hon. J. W. Kendall, of Morgan, M.M. Redwine, of Martinsburg, Jas. E. Clarke and H. G. Burns, of Morehead, will conduct the prosecution and the defense will be conducted by Z. T. Young alone. A large number of witnesses have been summoned, and the trials of these cases will draw a large crowd of people to the town."27 | ||||||||||
