| There is a Humphrey Pigman buried in Pine Hill Cemetery with death date 10 Aug 1897 and inscribed as "age 78 years" (no birth date listed), who may be this Humphrey. There is no other Humphrey Pigman listed in the 1880 census of Rowan County, and none at all in the 1900 census, and no other Humphrey Pigman burial listed in Rowan County. There are two problems with that identification, though. The first is that an age of 78 in 1897 would imply a birthdate aound 1819, which is 8 years older than that implied for this Humphrey in the 1850 and 1860 census. The second problem is that the Humphrey in Pine Hill Cemetery is buried under a double stone with a wife Gladys who died 20 Aug 1890, aged 68 at the time, implying a date of birth around 1822. There is no Elizabeth Pigman buried in Rowan County. It is somewhat unlikely that Elizabeth and Gladys are the same person, since she was consistently listed as Elizabeth in her marriage record and three censuses. So either the Humphrey Pigman buried in Pine Hill Cemetery is a different person who arrived in Rowan County after 1880, during which time this Humphrey and Elizabeth moved away, or, if they are the same person, the age at death is wrong by 7 or 8 years and Humphrey remarried to a Gladys before he died. |
1850 census of Letcher Co., Ky, p. 152a, records as family #126:
Pigman, Umphry, 23; Elizabeth, 20; Mariah, 2; John B., 2/12. All born in Ky.
1860 census of Letcher Co., Ky, p. 747, records as family #504:
Pigman, Umphrey, 32, farm laborer; Elizabeth, 31; Mariah, 10; Wesley, 10; Marinda, 6; Rosa, 4; Hiram, 2; Marion, 2/12. All born in Ky.
(Wesley age 10 may be the same person as John B. age 2/12 in 1850. Humphrey's father was named John Wesley, so it would be a natural name for a first son. On the other hand, there is a son John age 16 in the 1880 census, when Wesley or John B. should be about 30. It is very unusual to give two children the same name unless one of them died very young. So another possibility is that John B. died shortly after the 1850 census, and Wesley here was not really 10, but only 9 or even 8. The age for Mariah is off by 2 years.)
