| Notes for Virginia E. "Odessa" Quesenberry | ||||||||||||
| I have no solid proof that Virginia E. Quesenberry Dalton and Odessa Quesenberry Dalton are the same person, but it seems very likely, considering the following evidence: I've found only one marriage record for Fielden Dalton, to Virginia E. Quesenberry, daughter of Floyd and Rachel Quesenberry, in 1896 in Floyd Co., VA. The Kentucky Death index lists Virginia E. Dalton, died 4 May 1943, age 70, in Rowan Co., residence same, certificate Vol. 25, #12290. The above records suggest that Fielden Dalton was married to Virginia E. Quesenberry in 1896 and stayed married to her until her death. However, all other records I've found refer to Fielden's wife as Odessa. Past Images of Rowan County7 has a photograph of the family of Fielden Dalton and Odessa Quisenberry, including a Collie Quisenberry labelled as a brother of Odessa. The 1910 census of Rowan County lists Fielden's wife as Odessa, and says they had been married 14 years at the time (i.e., since 1896), and that Odessa was the mother of the 4 children in the family at that time. The 1920 census also records Fielden's wife as Odessa, and there is a Collie Quesenberry listed as brother-in-law residing with the family. The 1890 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, lists a daughter Dessie age 17 with the family of Cloyd and Rachel Quesenberry, with no daughter named any variation of Virginia. The above records all suggest that Fielden was married to Odessa Quesenberry from at least 1896 through 1920. Most intriguing is the cemetery record. Next to Fielden Dalton's single stone in Caudill Cemetery, there is a stone with the names Virginia Elizabeth Dalton and Billie Odessa Dalton. Virginia has the dates 2 May 1873-4 May 1943, but there are no dates for Billie Odessa. Dewie Black's transcription of the cemetery lists it as a "double stone", suggesting two burials, perhaps of a mother and young child, but I wonder if it might not really be two names on a single-burial stone, indicating that she went by both names. (This is the only record I've seen showing "Billie Odessa".) It would be nice to get a photograph of those graves to get a better idea how they are laid out, and whether it looks like three people are buried there or just Fielden and one wife. Also, I could not find any death record for Odessa, Odessie, Dessie, Dessa, Billie, etc. (There was a Dessie M. Dalton d. 22 Sep 1980 age 61 in Morgan Co., but that would put her birthdate about 1919, making her at least one and possibly two generations younger than Odessa Quesenberry Dalton.) So at this point I am assuming that Virginia and Odessa are the same person. It would be helpful to get some more records, though, including the details of Virginia's death certificate, her obituary and Fielden's obituary, the 1900 census reading for the family (probably in Carroll Co. but perhaps Floyd Co.), and the details of their children's marriage records. | ||||||||||||
