1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists two families in household #305, each with only one surviving parent:
John McClain, 35; John Jr., 13; Sarah, 10; Rosline, 4; Elizabeth, 1. Elizabeth McClain, 33; Thomas, 10; Daniel, 8; John, 4; Judy, 8/12.
From the birth record for Rosaline, this John is the one who married Polly Swinnea/Swinny. The LDS Ancestral File identifies the Elizabeth in this record with Elizabeth McClain, the daughter of Charles McClain. But rather than assume that she would have 4 illegitimate children, I am going to tentatively assume that this Elizabeth is the widow of John's brother, rather than his sister. (I have not found birth records for any of Elizabeth's children.) |
