| Clipping reprinted in Rowan County Jottings by Leroy Hinton, from an unspecified local newspaper, probably the Mountain Scorcher: "Mar 9, 1906 - Elliottville: Mrs. W. A. Fouch and daughter Miss Vada have returned from visiting friends and relatives at Olive Hill.... Well we had a terrible race monday eve!, listen and I'll tell ye all about it, Misses Zona and Vada Fouch also Miss Gypsie Pettit were in our town shopping, and as the girls started home an old gander owned by N. L. Wells started after Miss Vada like a blowing viper, she started to run and on looking back discovered that the gander was running too, and this scared Miss Vada, so she was not looking where she was going, the last I heard of her she had crossed the wire fence, ha! ha! ha!, so we will just say to Miss Vada the next time she comes to town that she had better mind what she's about or that old gander will sure get you ef you don't watch out." |
