| Notes for UNKNOWN Cornett |
This is a "collector" node for Cornetts whose parents I don't know. It is not meant to imply any siblingship. All they have in common is that at some point either they or some of their known descendents lived in Rowan County, Kentucky. (Since I have no Cornett ancestry, I am not tracing Cornetts except those that settled in this area.)
It appears that the Cornett/Cornutt family was in Henrico Co., VA around the time of the Revolutionary War. From there some of them went to Grayson Co VA before 1820, while others went to southeast Kentucky (Perry and Letcher counties) before 1830. By 1850 there are more Cornetts (and variant spellings) in each of Grayson Co VA, Perry Co KY and Letcher Co KY than are left in Henrico Co. VA, and there are very few anywhere outside those 4 counties. E.g., the 1860 US Census Index CD of VA, MD, NC, and KY shows 1 Cornett family in Washington Co VA, 2 Cornutt families in Ashe Co NC, and 1 Cornett family in Watauga Co., NC. Those are the only 4 Cornett/Cornutt families in the whole region outside the four counties mentioned.
Then after several generations, a few families from both those branches came to Rowan Co between 1870 and 1880! You can tell the two branches apart in the Rowan Co censuses of that period by whether their parents' place of birth is VA or KY.
