| Notes for Susannah Cogswell |
| Daughter of Jedediah Cogswell. |
| Census |
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #166:
Susannah Day, 45; Isaac, 20; William, 15; Jilson, 14. All born in Kentucky.
(This is one of two families in the 1850 census of Morgan Co. with a son William between the ages of 10 and 19. I don't know which is the one who married Martha Riddle.) |
| Notes for Jacob & Susannah (Family) |
Fleming Co. marriage license book #1 records license issued to Jacob Day and Susannah Cogswell on 12 Feb 1818, no return.
The Nicholas County Historical Society published a county history containing an article by Margaret Hinton Frye of Paris, Kentucky, which includes these two paragraphs:
"Jacob Day married Susannah Cogswell, daughter of Jedediah of New Jersey and Fleming County, Ky, on February 12, 1818 in Fleming County. Their family consisted of James A. (b. November 10, 1818), Jedediah (b. Nov. 8, 1820, married Cythiann Fannin), Frances (b. Sept. 18, 1823, married Miles W. Montgomery), Elizabeth (b. June 12, 1825), Daniel W. (May 18, 1827--July 16, 1897, buried Rose Hill), Isaac C. (Dec 13, 1829-July 19, 1899), Lydia (b. Jan. 24, 1832), William M. (b. Feb. 26, 1834, married Aug. 28, 1856 to Martha Jane Riddle, and died a week later of typhoid fever, Sept 4) and Jilson L. (b. May 25, 1836).
Following Jacob's death in 1838, Susannah faced many hardships rearing her family alone. On Jan 4, 1853, she married widower John Williams, the son of Daniel and Violet Crouch, early pioneer settlers to Kentucky from Virginia. Daniel was an Indian fighter, minister, and Revolutionary
soldier. After John Williams' death in 1869, Susannah came to Nicholas County to live with her sons, Daniel W. Day and Isaac C. Day, and Jilson L. Day who were Nicholas County residents. Susannah's last years were spent in the home of Isaac, where she died on Sept. 27, 1892, at the age of 93. Her tombstone reads, "Susan, wife of Jacob Day." Susannah and her sons, Dan,
Isaac C. and their wives all rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery." |
