This Indenture made and entered into this 9th day of December 1841 by and between Joseph Myers and Rachel his wife late Rachel Alfrey, Absalom Clark & Barbary his wife late Barbary Alfrey, George Alfrey, Fielding Alfrey, Adam Alfrey, Christopher Myers and Elizabeth his wife late Elizabeth Alfrey, Rachel Alfrey widow of Samuel Alfrey dec'd who was son of said John Alfrey dec'd, George Harmon & Betsy his wife late Betsy Alfrey, Anderson Johnson and Lydia his wife late Lydia Alfrey, Alfred Alfrey, Edmund Utterback & Ruthella his wife late Ruthella Alfrey, Patterson Utterback & Barbary Ann his wife late Barbary Ann Alfrey heirs and legal representatives of John Alfrey dec'd and also s'd (here the posted jpg is cut off) (Although the jpg is captioned as a "land settlement", the estate had been settled quite some time previously, and this is simply a deed in which the heirs are selling the land they had inherited ten years earlier.) First off, I want to say that I accept this deed as proof that both Adam Alfrey and Fielding Alfrey are sons of John Alfrey, not of Samuel Alfrey & Rachel Cassity. So Vernon Alfrey's account in the 1956 Rowan County News is wrong, as is my web page which contains a family group for Samuel based partially on Vernon's article. The heirs listed after Rachel appear to be the children of Samuel, making them grandchildren of John Alfrey. Is this correct? (Alfred is the only one I have proof of. Sam & Rachel also had children John born ca 1825 and Melvina born ca 1831, but they would have been minors in 1841.) It appears unlikely that the heirs listed after Rachel are children of John, or he would have two daughters named Barbary and two daughters named Elizabeth (Betsy being a nickname of the latter.) | ||||||

| Rowan County death records on LDS microfilm #216,839 show Barbary Ann Alfrey, died 4 Nov 1858, age 88 years 1 month 2 days, born Virginia, parents unknown, widowed, cause of death old age, notated "has been helpless for many years." (The age at death, if correct, would imply a birthdate of 2 Oct 1770.) The LDS Ancestral File lists her surname as Green.
