| Census Notes for Thompson Alfrey |
1860 census of Rowan Co. lists as family #124:
Alfrey, Tompson, 28; Harriett, 23; Ellen, 5; Andrew, 2; Leander, 2/12. All born in Ky.
(There are no other Alfrey or Jones families nearby. They are mostly surrounded by Donohues, Wilsons, and Norrises.)
1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, page 10, lists as family #73:
Alfrey, Thompson, 38, farmer; Harriet, 37; Ellen, 17; Andrew, 13; Nelson, 11; Rolly, 9; John, 7; Mary, 5; Harry, 3. All born in Kentucky. (The age for Harriett is 4 years older than that implied by the 1860 census, and 5 years older than that implied by the 1880 census, so I am trusting the 1860 age more. Nelson is probably the same person as Leander who was born in the spring of 1860.)
1880 census of Rowan Co., Pearce precinct, lists as family #206 (next door to family of John Alfrey & Ellen (Shopire):
Alfrey, Thompson, 48; Harriett, 42; John, 16; Mary J., 15; Harison, 14; Alice, 10; George, 7. All born in Kentucky. |
| Notes for Harriett Jones |
She is probably the Harriett Jones, age 15, listed with the family of Sebert Kennick in the 1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky:
Division 1, household #385: Kennick, Sebert B., 46; Rose A., 41, Mary T., 15; Coombs, Rosa, 19; Jones, Harriett, 15. All born Ky.
I can't find any other Harriett, Henrietta, or female Jones with a middle initial H., aged 10 to 15 in the 1850 census of Morgan Co. or Fleming Co. Her marriage took place at a "William Jones" house, but all of the William Jones in Morgan Co. or Fleming Co. (of which there were several) either were not married by 1839, or were listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses with no daughters of the right age bracket. Yet the name Harriett suggests a relationship to our James William Jones (son of William & Sarah Jones) & Lucinda Brown, who named their first child Catherine Harriett Jones (she was born around 1818, though.) The William Jones whose house she was married at may have been her grandfather or uncle rather than her father.
Brenda Ziegler, a granddaughter of Ora Venna Alfrey, daughter of John W. Alfrey and Mary Jane Pettit, reports "Grandma Ora had a picture labelled 'Dad's cousin Bill Moore. His mother Sarah was sister to Harriett Jones Alfrey'." She doesn't know what the name of Sarah's husband was, or whether she was older or younger than Harriett. I couldn't find a Sarah Jones married to a Moore in Morgan or Fleming counties. |
| Notes for Thompson & Harriett (Family) |
Morgan Co. marriage register #1 lists marriage of Thompson Alfrey and Harriett Jones on 11 Aug 1853, witnesses J. D. Hunt and James Donahue, at William Jones' by J. G. Williams.
But also, Fleming Co. Ky marriage records list marriage on 30 Aug 1853 of Thompson Alfrey, 21, single, born and resident in Fleming Co., to Harriet Johnson, 17, single, born Fleming Co., resident of Morgan Co., Ky.
I have examined both microfilms, and they do indeed have different surnames. One of them must be a mistranscription by the county clerk of the minister's original report. The birth certificate for their son Rolly gives his mother's maiden name as Harriett Jones. So I think the Johnson is wrong. |
