| (In scrolling through the microfilms of 1940's newspapers, it was interesting to observe that in 1943 notices of the deaths of local servicemen were being reported in multi-column articles displayed prominently on the front page, as this one was, while by 1945 they were relegated to brief single-paragraph notices. As the war wore on, the frequent death notices apparently became detrimental to morale and started to be downplayed rather than promoted as heroic sacrifices.) |
