| Notes for Margaret Cornett |
For many years I had Margaret linked in my database as a daughter of Jesse H. Cornett and Nancy Branham Smith, based on correspondence in 1989 and 1990 with Elaine Winkler. But that is inconsistent with other records, such as the 1850 census of Letcher Co., which lists a daughter Frankie age 15. (Elaine may have simply assumed that every Cornett who appeared in Rowan Co records in the 1850's was from Jesse's family.)
There is no teenage Margaret, Maggie or Peggy Cornett in the 1850 census of Letcher Co. But there is a 15-year-old Peggy Cornett in Perry Co., daughter of Hiram Cornett age 39. This fits perfectly with the birth record of Margaret's sons Robert and John, which list her birthplace as Perry Co. So I am tentatively linking her in as a daughter of Hiram. I do not know how Hiram fits into the Cornett family tree. |
