| She is listed as Ellen age 8 in the 1870 census. The first name of "Nancy" is based on the marriage record and the 1880 census, which lists her as "N. Ellen". But William and Anna already had a daughter Nancy who was listed as 10 in 1850 and 20 in 1860. I can find no marriage record for any Nancy Mays between 1860 and 1870. It is quite possible that this Nancy Ellen is not really a daughter of William and Anna, but is instead an out-of-wedlock daughter of one of their older daughters, either the Nancy Mays who was born about 1839/1840 or of Frances Susan (who had several children out of wedlock by at least three different fathers.) If the older Nancy died in childbirth, then her parents might have named the child after her mother, then raised her as their own and called her by her middle name. |
