Notes for Isaac Pierce Martin
From John P. Alderman's annotated 1850 census of Carroll Co., pp 25-26:
"227. Isaac Martin 43, farmer, $1000; Elizabeth 44; Martha A. 22; Giles 20; Charles 18; Malissa 16; Irena 15; Joseph 13; Mary 11; James 9; Oney 7f; Ann A.C. 5; Daniel 7/12. All b. Va.
Isaac was born in Patrick Co., probably in 1805, to Giles and Nancy (Ingram) Martin. He married in 1827, Elizabeth Smith (1806-1897) dau of Peter and Martha (Hancock) Smith. Isaac came here about 1830, bought land on Cherry Creek near Fremont and prospered. His family was one of the few slaveholders in the county. He lost considerably in the Civil War, both property and relatives, and he died May 12, 1865, at the war's end."
