Jesse Petitt's family bible1 has two entries following that for the marriage of Abraham Crose and Martha Petitt. The first says "Walter F. Cornet was born November the 7th 1880". The second says "Walter F. Crose was born November the 7 1880". Lila Petitt Chadwell and Ola Petitt McBrayer and others say that this is because Martha Pettit was pregnant by her brother-in-law Jesse Cornett at the time that she married Abraham Crose. Walter was raised as a Crose, though, so I've entered him in this family.

His WWI Draft Registration card, issued in 1917/1918, records Walter Crose, age 37, residence Crix, Ky, born 15 Feb 1881, occupation farmer, self-employed, nearest relative Mary Lizzie Crose, wife.

The above birthdate is in conflict with the one in the family bible.

Her gravestone has the dates 1885 - 1972, but she was probably really born around 1883, judging by census and marriage records.

Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 190-191 records marriage on 12 Feb 1899 of Walter Crose, 18, farmer, residence Fraley, born and mother born in Rowan Co., father born Morgan Co., to Mary E. Matthews, 16, residence Elliottsville, at A. B. Crose's by Wm. R. Mitchell, witnesses Gordon Kegley and John Peddet, surety by Abe Crose.

I cannot find this family in 1900 or 1910.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, precinct #7, p. 7B, enumerated 19 Jan 1920, lists as family #9:
Crose, Walter, 38; Mary, wife, 38; James, son, 14. All born Ky/Ky/Ky.

1930 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Clay township, New Boston village, enumerated 19 April, lists on p. 7A as family #127/133, at 3542 Gallia Ave:
Crose, Mary E., wife, housekeeper at rooming house, 48, age at first marriage 17, b. Ky Missouri Ky; Walter, head, 48, age at first marriage 17, b. Ky Ky Ky; Norman, son, 29, married, age at first marriage 25, b. Ky Ky Ky; Elma, dau-in-law, 19, age at first marriage 15, b. Ohio Ky Ky; Thelma H., grandda, 3, b. Ohio Ky Ohio; Cleta M., granddau, 1 1/12, b. Ohio Ky Ohio.

Their son James is two households below.
