Census Notes for Andrew Newton & Nellie (Family)
1910 census of Harrison Co., Ky, district 3, enumerated 9 May, lists on p. 16B as family #212/213:
Alfrey, Newton, 29, farmer; Nellie, wife, 23, first marriage for both, married 7 years, mother of 5 children, 5 living; Robert, son, 6; Lillian, dau, 5; James, son, 2; Roxy, dau, 1 10/12.
Note that there are only four children listed, despite Nellie being recorded as the mother of 5 living children. One possible explanation is that their daughter Leona, listed as 10 in the 1920 census, had alreadly been born, but after the April 15 cutoff date for the census.
Identificate of this Newton Alfrey as the son of Frank Alfrey and Jane Hall is primarily based on the Robert age 16 who appears as a nephew with Festus Alfrey in 1920 in Indianapolis, and the fact that Newton’s 1918 draft registration card was filed in Indianapolis and listed his nearest relative as a son Robert.
See Census Notes for Newton’s second marriage for the 1920 reading.
