His obituary in the Rowan County News of Feb. 6, 1998 reported, “Gene Austin Alfrey, 61, of Auburndale, Fla., formerly of Morehead, died Sunday, Feb. 1, at the Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, Fla.
He was born Nov. 23, 1936 at Rowan County to Lurlene Penix Alfrey and the late Austin Newton Alfrey.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Alfrey in 1963.
He was in the U.S. Air Force for four years, was employed by the Polk County Florida School system where he taught for seven years, was principal for 18 years and worked in the Central Office for five years before his retirement. He was also a member of the Morehead Christian Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Joyce Marie Moore Alfrey; one son, Captain Daryl Austin Alfrey of Gulf Breeze, Fla., two daughters, Jeannie Marie Carroll of Lake Alfred, Fla., and Leigh Ann Morris of Davenport, Fla. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Erin Marie Alfrey, Michael Austin Alfrey, Tess Marie Carroll, Mariah Teal Morris and Zachary David Morris.
Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with the Rev. Jeff Fannin and the Rev. Bill Watson officiating with burial at the Lee Cemetery in Morehead with full military rites conducted at the graveside by the Morehead American Legion Post Number 126.
Pallbearers: Captain Daryl Austin Alfrey, Todd Alfrey, Todd Scobee, Jim White, Chris McClurg, Harvey Pennington, David Hicks and Jack Barber. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Burn Center, Cinncinnati, Ohio.”
