GOODPASTER / GREEN / SPENCE / MYERS / JONES: My GGrandmother, Anna Goodpaster, b. May 1877 in Bath Co., m. abt 1893 to my GGrandfather George Thomas Green (Greene, Greane). They had two sons, Roy Green b. August 1894 d. July 16, 1903 in Midland, and my Grandfather Fred Verne Greane b. January 1900 in Salt Lick. Anna and George divorced in May 1903. George took my grandfather and moved on to Tennessee and later Kansas after remarrying. Records indicate Anna married Lafe Spence March 1, 1905 in Bath Co. and had a daughter Goldie Spence born abt. 1906 in Bath Co. Lafe may have died or they were divorced before 1908. The 1910 Census shows Annie married to Aaron Myers b. abt 1855, who had been married twice previously. The census lists Paul Myers b. abt. 1908 as the son of Annie and Aaron. Aaron had older children: Leonard Myers b. abt 1889, Farmer Myers b. abt. 1892, and Fred Myers b. abt. 1896. My grandfather indicated that Annie was widowed again by about 1930 and may have moved to Ohio or Indiana to be near one of her sons. I am looking for any information on Goldie Spence, Paul Myers and, of course my GGrandparents and their progenitors. I am especially interested in finding info on William S. Green and Nancy Vernetta Jones Green, who were the parents of George Green. They lived near the Licking River in both Bath and Rowan Counties around the turn of the century. They also lived in Montgomery Co. at one time. I would appreciate any help and would be glad to share info on the Green, Jones, Ralls, Razor, and Goodpaster lines. Thanks.

SLUSHER / MAUK / MAYS / JENNINGS: The Elliott Co. Vital Statistics page lists marriage of Joseph Slusher and Margaret Mauk on 19 Dec 1878. Does anyone know who Joseph's parents were, or at least his age and birthplace? I have a GGG Uncle, Joseph Slusher Jr. (11 Mar 1860 Morgan Co. KY - 18 May 1933 Rowan Co. KY), s/o Joseph H. Slusher and Nancy Ann Wade, who lived in the Elliottville (Hoggtown) area, and who would be of marrying age in 1878, but the only two wives I have listed for him are Mindy Maze/Mays, m. ca 1884, and Sarah E. Jennings, m. 30 Aug 1895, both in Rowan Co. Is this the same Joseph Slusher, or a different one?

DAVIS / SUBLETT / LEWIS / OAKLEY: I am researching the following Davis and Sublett families, who lived in Morgan, Elliott and Rowan counties.
  1. Henry Davis b abt. 1780, NC, wife Cela or Celia b abt. 1782 NC, in 1850 Morgan Co KY census. (Is he the same as the Henry Davis who is listed in the 1820 Tax List of Floyd Co KY? Are the other Davis families in Floyd Co. related?)
  2. Hardin or Harding Davis b abt 1809 in NC, s/o above Henry & Celia Davis.
  3. Levi Davis s/o above Hardin Davis, he m. Polly Lewis 28 Feb 1845 in Morgan Co KY. They had children: Hirum b ca 1844/1845, Rachael b ca 1847, Henry (see below), Martha b ca 1851, Celia b ca 1852 and Andrew b ca 1859.
  4. Henry Davis, b. 14 Sep 1847, m. Corrilda Sublett 21 Sep 1876 in Elliot Co KY. (Parents' names not listed on marriage record, but I have proof of Henry's parents from his death record.) They had children: Henderson b ca 1875, Hirum 1878, dau Francis b ca 1880, Mary Elizabeth b 1881, David Lee b 1883, James (Jimmie) b 1887, Alonzo (Lonnie) b 1888, Alice b 1889, Nora b 1891, Myrtle b 1894, Corda b 1896, Ezra Dewey b 1900, John, Parthany, "Hence" (possibly same individual as Henderson above).
  5. James Sublett b. ca 1825, living near Henry & Corrilda (Sublett) Davis on the census, who was possibly Corrilda's father.

I am have unconfirmed information that Corrilda's parents were James Sublett and Juliann Oakley, and that James was the son of Daniel Sublett b. 25 Apr 1794 and d. 1836. Also further unverified information on Daniel Sublett's ancestry. I would like to correspond with anyone else researching these families. I am especially seeking proof of Corrilda's ancestry.

REMY / RAMEY / PUCKETT: Per a letter I received recently from a fellow researcher, my ggg grandmother Mary "Polley" Remy b. ca 1798 VA, dau of John Remy and Nancy Romans, of Floyd Co KY, was supposed to have lived the last years of her life in Rowan County KY. The only recorded marriage record for Mary "Polley" Remy was to Thomas Puckett, but he disappeared shortly after the marriage, and Mary went by both Remy/Ramey and Puckett. Here is my clue: "Poor Polley ended up a pauper in Rowan Co KY, close to 100 years old." Since there was no 1890 census, and she would have been over 100 years old in 1900, I don't even know what record could be found for her living in Rowan County at that time. In 1880 she was living in Lawrence Co Ky with her son Thadeus Remy who died in 1890. Any help will be appreciated. Names found in association with Mary and son Thadeus include: Remy, Ramey, Puckett, Caldwell, Shepherd, Black, Cordial/Caudill, White, McDowell, and Williams.

GOODPASTER / GREEN / JONES / RAZOR / RIDDLE / RALLS / SPENCE : I am searching these families in Rowan, Bath, Montgomery, Morgan, Menifee, and Fleming counties. My grandfather, Fred Vern Greane, was born in Salt Lick, but his parents lived in Farmers and around Midland. His father was George Thomas Greane (Green, Greene) son of William S. Green and Nancy Vernetta (Nettie) Jones. His mother was Annie Goodpaster, I think she may have been a daughter of James Goodpaster and Henrietta Riddle. Nettie Jones was the daughter of Nathaniel Ralls Jones who m. Barbary Green 29 Aug 1839 in Fleming Co. George and Annie were divorced in 1903. Annie remarried later and had sons. She was widowed by 1930 and may have moved to Ohio or Indiana in the 1930s. Her husband may have been named Spence. I am looking especially for death records for William S. and Nettie Green. William had a brother named George. I have extensive data on the Goodpaster line and several others and would be glad to share, including the exchange of GEDCOM files.

Tobias and his wife Francis Steagall/Stigall moved to Morgan Co. Kentucky around 1838 and name changes over the years from Cock to Cocks to Cox. Tobias' son was Maston or Mastin Cox (1826-1913). [DAY (Editor's Note): The real name of the balladeer and fiddler known as "Jilson Setters" was James William "Jim" Day. A Rowan County native, he died in Ashland, Boyd Co., KY on 6 May 1942 at age 67. Jilson Setters was a stage name invented by his agent and publicist, Jean Thomas. "Lost Hope Hollow" may be a fictitious name as well. (Does anyone know otherwise?) There is an article about Jim Day in the March 1997 issue of Past and Present, the newsletter of the Rowan County Historical Society. Membership in the society is $6 year.
